Like its older, longer, and more well-known sibling, the Appalachian Trail, the Benton MacKaye Trail begins at Springer Mountain near Ellijay, GA. Both trails have the same father, Benton MacKaye, and both are products of his vision. MacKaye originally proposed not only a long-distance trail from Georgia to Maine, but also a network of shorter trails branching out and rejoining the AT to make long wilderness loops. Thus far, the BMT is the only one of the hoped-for loops to reach completion.
This trail guide includes elevation profiles, waypoints, and details of each trail section. The three booklets - Georgia, NC/TN, and Smokies - provide details for the full length of the BMT.
